Golden Nugget Dwarf Japanese Barberry
 
A new golden barberry in an exciting, compact, dwarf form. Displays attractive, non-burning, golden foliage with an orange cast most of the season. Excellent color contrast in borders. Deciduous. Full sun. Slow grower to only 12 inches tall, 18 inches wide. This plant is as close to DEER PROOF as we can get!

Figs
They have a number of attributes that make them great for the foothills. Figs are an easy care plant that is deer resistant and drought tolerant.  We carry three types of figs. Black Mission, Brown Turkey, and White Kadota. All grow about 20 feet tall and wide, but can be kept much lower through pruning. Figs have a interesting winter shape and can be used for their ornamental interest as well as the fruit.

Southern Highbush Blueberries
The new southern high bush varieties are taking California by storm. These high bush types were bred to withstand the heat of summer. The old fashion eastern type of blueberry just didn’t do as well here. We carry five different types of southern high bush types that can be planted right now. Blueberries do great in containers since you can fill the container up with perfect blueberry soil. Use our planting mix as it comes from the bag since it has just what blueberries want. In addition these high bush types are handsome shrubs worthy of placement for their beauty as well as fruit bearing qualities.

Mediterranean Pink Health
(Erica x darleyensis)


Mediterranean Pink Heath is the perfect low growing, rounded plant for the mountains. Deer resistant, blooming in fall and winter, and growing great in full to part sun. We have a beautiful crop available now. Come check out this classic mountain shrub.

Toyon
Everywhere in the chapparal of our local hills you will see a shrub covered with bright red berries called Toyon. This native shrub grows to about six to eight feet tall and wide in the full sun. It is very tough and is an excellent choice for the native, mediteranean, or xeriscape landscape. One its established it needs very little water or care. It is evergreen and has attractive white flowers in the late summer before the berries appear. The berries persist giving this plant the common name of California Holly. It was this plant that covered the hills in southern California that was the reason they named the town “Hollywood”.

"Red Beauty” Holly

Abundant crops of bright red berries combined with dense, deep green foliage create an annual spectacle. A beautiful specimen or hedge. Use for framing an entrance or lining a drive.

Maintains its dense, upright conical form 7 to 10 ft. tall, 4 to 5 ft. wide with little or no pruning. This evergreen shrub is highly deer resistant! Grows in sun or part sun and is quite cold hardy even growing in Lake Tahoe.


Red Maple
Acer rubrum

This large deciduous tree has pyramidal form when young becoming rounded with age. Glossy green leaves turn brilliant orange-scarlet, extremely showy. Growing best in full sun it is fast growing to 40 to 50 feet high, 30 to 35 feet wide. It is a popular shade tree for its speed of growth, hardiness, and spectacular fall color.


Butterfly Bush

Butterfly Bush is a must in any wildlife garden. The name comes from its amazing ability to attract butterflies when it flowers. The flowers come in all sorts of colors and bloom all summer long. Growing best in full sun it is also deer resistant. A must in any Mediterranean climate garden it has fragrant flowers. Growing from 5 feet to 10 they can be pruned to almost any size. It is a very tough plant that is a great first plant for kids to try growing.


Sage

Some of the most vivid and profuse blooming flowers is sage. Sage are also great plants for the full sun being very tolerant of dry conditions during summer. Sages are a key component in the Mediterranean climate we have in the foothills. Sage is also quite deer resistant!  There are many different types of sage with a huge variety of flower colors. They all have fragrant foliage in heat or when brushed against. Sage generally blooms from about mid-spring well into the fall and most are perennial in our area.

Thumbelina Leigh English Lavendar

A versatile small lavender renowned for a size well suited to containers. But like its full size predecessors it remains valuable for dry slopes, banks and rock gardens. Exceptional component of Mediterranean style gardens both formal and casual. With similar requirements as western natives, it is suitable for xeriscape or wild gardens since it is quite deer resistant. Equally suited to traditional mixed borders with perennials and flowering shrubs provided soil is well drained. Performs best in artistic pots and particularly beautiful in aged classical terra cotta.

Pixie “Meadowbrite”

Pixie is a true dwarf Echinacea reaching 18 to 20 inches tall and 20 inches wide. An adorable mini coneflower, yielding a profusion of pink blooms that sport a yellow-brown center with as many as 15 buds and blooms on a one to two-year-old plant. The foliage is denser than most Echinacea’s and has a stunning blue tint. Ideal for perennial borders, rock gardens and containers, Pixie has performed very well in full sun or dappled shade.

Lithodora

This blue mat-like perennial looks gorgeous around rocks and landscape boulders. Use at the top of retaining walls or to soften unsightly curbs. Like a ground cover, it spreads over a very large area. Great on slopes, berms and banks to offer both color and erosion control. Though it`s ideal for the traditional rock garden, it`s also a natural in the Mediterranean landscape.Beautiful deep-blue flowers cover this wonderful evergreen ground cover or rock garden accent. Sprawling with a slightly mounded form. Likes some shade in extremely hot areas. Full to partial sun. Slow grower to 1 foot tall, spreading to 6 feet wide.


Rhodendron Daphnoides
Dense growing evergreen shrub is a highly valued landscape ornamental. Large trusses of showy flowers - beautiful contrast to dark green leaves. It is very effective as an accent. Foliage unlike any other Rhododendron. Rolled glossy leaves are tightly spaced on stems of this dense mound. Prolific pompon trusses are purple. Partial sun is best. Moderate grower to 4 to 6 feet tall and wide.

Marina Strawberry Tree

This delightful small garden tree is just perfect for our “Outdoor Foothill Lifestyle”.  Rosy pink flowers appear at the same time as the red and yellow strawberry-like fruit. Good firescaping plant as well as low water user. This tree is evergreen, with beautiful bark that peels to reveal red branches and trunk. Grows to about 25 feet tall and wide.

Weeping Giant Sequoia

Its graceful, weeping branches make a statement in the landscape! Bold, rustic appearance to the closely held pendulous branches, the unusual form becomes the focal point of the garden. This slow growing, California native plant grows best in full sun, is low water using, and is deer resistant making it perfect for our “Outdoor Foothill Lifestyle”

Royal Heritage™ Strain Lenten Rose

New for 2007!
Outstanding results after years of research. The evergreen foliage exhibits superior form to its divided leaves, improved leathery texture and richer green color. In late spring, branched stems hold pendant saucer-shaped flowers ranging from pure white to near black, the predominant color is red. When given dappled sun and proper moisture and excellent drainage these hybrids have an extended flowering period. Besides enjoyment of the blooms in a woodland setting, they make fine cut flowers. Plant this perennial where its off season blossoms will grace shaded and woodland landscapes. Plant under trees in small clusters to add size and drama. Also fits into Asian-inspired landscapes under Japanese Maple and clipped Japanese Black Pine. A must for anyone with large old trees, under which few other plants will thrive.


Kiwi "Issai"
Did you know kiwis do great in the foothills? This vigorous twining vine needs no pollenizer unlike other Kiwi’s. This fast growing plant produces delicious smooth-skinned fruit on a vine that can grow 20 feet long. It is very attractive on arbor or trellis. Grows best in full sun.

Berries Magic Holly
(Ilex meserveae)

Bright red berries guaranteed each fall with fruiting and pollinator in the same pot. Densely set blue-green foliage on purple stems fills out this bushy shrub that’s excellent in the landscape, or as fresh cut decoration. Use as background, sheared or natural hedge and single winter specimen. Evergreen. Full to part sun. Moderate growth 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide.

Chinese Pistache
No other tree produces such a vibrant, broad range of fall color. It may be used dozens of ways as a shade tree, street tree, accent or front-yard specimen. Ideal for flanking driveways or use a pair to meet overhead at street side. Give this colorful drought-resistant tree a solid evergreen background to provide high-intensity contrast for seasonal changes.

The Giant Sequoia
(Sequoiadendron gigantea)
This stately, pyramidal tree with the most massive trunk in the world is a California native. Heavily covered with gray-green foliage, it`s a terrific feature tree in a large lawn or park area. This evergreen tree is deer resistant and will attract birds to feast of the seeds. Grows best in full sun. Fast grower to 70 to 80 feet tall, 30 to 35 feet wide, larger with age. Makes a great living Christmas Tree.
