New Garden Trends - Cactus and Succulents

Come to The Golden Gecko and catch this new gardening trend . . . Cactus and Succulents! While you can plant cactus and succulents into the ground here in the Foothills, they do have some special needs. Most of them require six hours of full sun, little water once established, fast draining soil (not our heavy clay soil) and some winter protection from frost. For these reasons we think they make the perfect container plants.  Read the rest of the article...

Instant Beauty
Out with the Old, in with the New!

The middle of summer finds some of the flowers we have planted looking a little ragged. To spice things up, we have plenty of fresh flowers to cheer up the summer garden. Some of the flowers that love heat are Zinnias, Petunias, Marigolds, Salvia, Verbena, and Million bells. In the shade we have impatiens, bacopa, ipomea, coleus, and more. The Golden Gecko has these flowers are available in 4" size pots, so that they are already blooming - for instant beauty!

Discover Mulch!

Now would be a good time to discover the benefits of mulching. With the summer heat upon us mulching provides a number of benefits for us and our plants. Mulching is the process of covering the soil around our plants with a protective layer of material. This protective layer keeps the sun from drying out the ground and the plants roots. Mulch two to three inches thick and you watering will be reduced, sometimes dramatically. While mulch can include just about anything, including rocks, generally it consists of different bark products. We recommend Greenall Shredded Cedar or Greenall Micro-Bark. They both provide the same benefits, they just look different. Coco-mulch is made out of the coco bean shells. It smells like chocolate, and the edges of the shells are rumored to keep slugs and snails away. Which ever you choose, mulch today for water savings and healthier plants.
